The Programme

Through the nationwide programme “Übermorgen – Neue Modelle für Kulturinstitutionen”, the German Federal Cultural Foundation is supporting 50 cultural institutions and municipalities in developing and planning fundamental structural transformation. The initiative is being delivered in collaboration with Bureau Ritter as the executive partner.

Over a period of eighteen months, the selected institutions will develop forward-looking projects aimed at reshaping cultural organisations in exemplary ways – ensuring they are future-ready, even in times of crisis. Alongside financial support of €50,000 per institution, the programme includes a comprehensive package of research trips and academies.

As part of the two-day future forums held at various locations, the funded institutions come together to share knowledge and collaborate on the development of their projects. The programme not only encourages peer learning and mutual support but also features expert insights and cultural policy discussions on cross-cutting themes such as participation and engagement, public value and commons, or challenges around renovation and building projects.

A series of research trips – tandem visits involving cultural leaders and local policy representatives – will take participants to five major European cities. These journeys offer the chance to engage in professional dialogue with international peers on what the cultural institutions of tomorrow might look like.

A total budget of €4.6 million has been earmarked for this initial phase of the programme. From 2027, the most promising and innovative concepts are expected to receive funding for implementation, following a renewed application and jury-led selection process.
