Future Forums

The academy programme of “Übermorgen”

by Cornelia Walter, Programme Director Übermorgen

We firmly believe that fresh perspectives and meaningful dialogue are essential for sparking fundamental innovations. That’s why the “Übermorgen” programme is not only focused on developing individual forward-looking projects, but also includes two components aimed at fostering exchange among cultural institutions: future forums and research trips.

Six future forums accompany the “Übermorgen” programme. Thematically, they centre on the challenges and urgent issues facing cultural institutions across sectors and regions alike: strategies for audience development, transcultural dialogue, participation and public value, along with questions around support structures, pay scales, and the growing skills shortage. All of these areas call for substantial structural change within theatres.

Through workshops and expert contributions, we aim to identify these crucial transformation processes and work together to craft strategies for putting them into practice. Local and regional authorities will also be invited to join forces with cultural institutions to co-create forward-thinking solutions and approaches. At the close of the orientation phase in December 2026, 50 future projects from the funded institutions will be showcased to the wider public.

The future forums are designed to enable the sharing of knowledge among the participating institutions. Held roughly every two months in different German cities, each forum features a two-day programme. They are developed in close partnership with the Institute for Cultural Management at the Hamburg University of Music and Theatre (KMM).
