Leipzig Theatre Workshops of the Future – A Production Centre for the Circular Economy
What becomes of the striking wooden ship, with its sails and fishing net, once the curtain falls on the opera production of The Flying Dutchman? The City of Leipzig’s Department of Culture is working towards establishing long-term material cycles within the municipal theatre workshops, which have traditionally produced sets and costumes for opera, drama, and the Theater der Jungen Welt. To this end, production processes will be consolidated, materials will be designed with reuse in mind from the outset, new substances will be tested, and AI-driven solutions developed for props and storage. Beginning in the workshops, this transformation extends to organisation, working methods, and ultimately artistic realisation itself. In this way, sustainability becomes not only a practical necessity, but also a creative challenge – and an opportunity to reimagine theatre.
