About us

Sophiensæle is one of Berlin’s most important centers for the independent performing arts. Located in a historically protected building complex that was formerly home to the Berlin Craftsmen’s Association (Handwerkervereinshaus), Sophiensæle presents a broad, ever-changing spectrum of performing arts.

The Project

Sophiensaele – A Production House for the Independent Performing Arts as a Model for the Future

Who owns cultural spaces – and who shapes their future? For over 100 years, the Sophiensaele have been exploring ideas of community and participation – a potential that is now set to be further developed. Who holds responsibility for a cultural venue? Can this responsibility also be shared collectively? How can such a space remain accessible, even in times of limited resources? In this initiative, the Sophiensaele are rethinking key principles of their work, including artistic self-governance, democratic embedding, and radical openness. Together with partners from the arts, politics, and civil society, they are striving to make these principles fit for the future. Exchange and inspiration lie at the heart of the project – both locally and internationally.
